Free calls on your mobile; anyone?

Imagine this – how would you like to have an offer which allows you to make free calls from your mobile phone?

Alright; now that I’ve got your attention, let’s get into the details. :)

Blyk, a well known UK based network operator, proposed this offer sometime back and it has created quite a buzz in the market. Now as you know, there is no such thing called a free lunch. Same goes with this case, as someone else pays for your calls. And who is this “someone else?” You guessed it right; the ubiquitous ad sponsors. Major companies like Buena Vista Entertainment, L’Oreal Paris, and Coca Cola are very much interested in this offer and other big companies expected to join soon. The people behind Blyk feel quite positive about this step, thanks to someone who has already been there, done that. Orange was the first operator to introduce advertising in mobile phones last year. The kind of response and feedback they have got so far are very much positive and this makes Blyk feel more confident about this offer.

As a subscriber, you will be allowed to make free calls from your mobiles but you will be showered with ads in your mobile phone. Now this offer of free phone calls might sound really tempting on paper; but not everyone will jump into this offer at the drop of the hat. There are going to be mixed opinions and therein lies the responsibility of the advertisers to convince the customers. We’ll have to wait and watch.
