Mobile Advertising to Go Mainstream?

A recent report from Limbo-GfK on mobile advertising has some encouraging news. It says that mobile advertising, as an advertising medium, is slowly becoming a mainstream phenomenon around the world. Here are some snippets from the report.

1. According to the report, nearly 35% of the mobile users in the U.S. got ads on their mobile phone during the fourth quarter of 2008. The number was particularly high with iPhone users – 42% of iPhone users in the country got mobile ads.

2. One third of mobile users who got ads responded to them in some way. Women, as expected, are more likely to respond than men.

3. 18-24 year-olds are most likely to respond to mobile ads.

4. In the UK, the mobile advertising market is growing bigger by the month. A lot of analysts have predicted a huge growth for the advertising medium which has made business owners, both small and large, take notice. As a result, a lot of marketers have decided to spend more on mobile advertising. The report claims that more than 50% of marketers in the UK have decided to increase their mobile advertising budgets in the coming months.

5. Already, more than 50% of advertising agencies in the UK have tried their hands on mobile advertising campaigns and have had relatively good success. So, it is likely to become an important part of the mainstream marketing plans both in the UK.

The way I see it, there are two important reasons why most marketers have decided to give mobile advertising a try. One is the huge success of companies like Blyk and AdMob. The other one, as we all know, is the global economic crisis which has made companies turn toward mobile advertising. At this credit-crunched time, it is obviously a wise move to spend on mobile advertising campaigns which are likely to give you better results than traditional advertising campaigns. Mobile web is huge - says Nielson Mobile

A latest report from Nielson Mobile says that mobile internet has reached a tipping point. According to its latest survey, there are over 40 million active mobile internet users in the U.S. alone. And the number is growing steadily by the day. So, Nielson Mobile states that mobile internet, as an advertising medium, has reached a critical mass. What this means to advertisers is that they now have a very good market with a good demographic depth.

Now, this should not be surprising for anyone who’s been following the mobile web market closely. Mobile broadband usage has skyrocketed in the recent times and we’ve had report after report predicting just how big mobile web can be in the future. So, all I can say to people who doubted the potential of mobile web is – I told you so. In fact, I think there is still scope for a huge growth. As more and more people start using Apple iPhones, Blackberries, Nokia N95s, and other such phones, the number of mobile web users will increase exponentially. Already, over 80% of iPhone users surf the internet regularly from their phone. So, with more and more sophisticated devices coming into the market, we can expect further growth.

Now that we’ve heard the good news, can you predict which the most popular website among mobile internet users is? If you said Yahoo, give yourself a self-congratulatory pat on your back.

This again should not be very surprising for people following the mobile web market closely. Yahoo has made tremendous progress in the mobile web market and it’s not surprising that it enjoys great popularity among users. However, Google and Microsoft come in the second and third spots respectively and are not far away either.

Mobile advertising - South Africa remains on top

South Africa is one country which is light years ahead of other countries when it comes to mobile advertising. It is considered the hottest market right now and the numbers speak for themselves. The average response rate for mobile advertising campaigns in South Africa is anywhere from 10% to 25%, which is nothing short of amazing.

The latest success story, MXit, proves it once again. MXit is a mobile social networking site which is as popular as Facebook in South Africa. With a subscriber base of over 7 million, the company is a dream for mobile advertisers. A huge number of mobile advertisers are interested in working with MXit as the response rates are really high.

3. Most importantly, South African mobile users are prolific when it comes to mobile web. A majority of mobile users use mobile internet very regularly and this helps mobile advertisers create interactive mobile advertising campaigns to reach out to them.

An article on mobile advertising and my thoughts on it

Advertising Age has a good article on mobile advertising. It talks about why 2008 won’t be “the” year for mobile advertising and how things can be improved to make it better than what it is right now.

I personally don’t agree a great deal with the fourth point which says the concept of mobile phone as a standalone advertising medium is a misnomer and it should be integrated with other popular media like TV, online, or print. While I agree that mobile advertising could complement these media greatly, I strongly believe that it has a future of its own as an advertising medium.

The fifth point of the article says there has not been a hallelujah moment for mobile advertising. The kind of moment which will make everyone take notice. I think it can happen soon. Oh; and I have my reasons for that too. Here’s exhibit one, two, and three.

Nevertheless, it has some good points. More importantly, at a time when bashing mobile advertising is considered cool, it’s nice to see someone come up with an article like this.
