Mobile phone to replace airplane boarding pass in India

In just about a year from now, people in India need not have boarding passes to board an airplane. They can do so with their mobile phone.

Siemens Airport Systems Laboratory, a Bangalore based company, says a technology it’s working on will soon replace the need for a physical boarding pass for people. Instead, they can use a 2D barcode they can receive right on their mobile phone. People working on the technology say that it will take about a year for them to test this technology with a pilot run, as they need to find a carrier, preferably a GSM operator, and there are some infrastructure issues that need to be addressed.

This will undoubtedly get a tremendous response from people as it makes their job so easy. Clearly, mobile phone is crossing all boundaries and is slowly becoming a multifaceted device that can be used for a variety of purposes.
