Well; it’s raining funds here in mobile advertising and networking market. After Smaato and Blyk, it’s MocoSpace which caught everyone’s attention a couple days back with two back-to-back milestones.
Firstly, it got a $4 million funding from a pool of investors which included General Catalyst, Pilot Group, and Michael Dearing, a former eBay executive. Secondly, MocoSpace recently went past the magical figure of 2 million users for its mobile social networking service. There is still a lot of scope for improvement as far as MocoSpace is concerned, but you’ve got to give it to those guys. Their mobile based social networking service gets over 1 billion page views every month. Believe me, that is just too big a number for a firm like this.
The user base of MocoSpace mainly consists of young, urban crowd who are into social networking as if their life depended on it, and it is evident from the number of page views this service gets every month.
What intrigues me the most is this – there are not many smart phones available in the market, at least as of now, and a majority of mobile users use ordinary handsets. In other words, mobile web experience will not be as good as it will be on a smart phone. If this kind of growth is possible at this stage, I wonder what would be the growth rate when more and more people start using smart phones in future. There’s a goldmine to be explored; that’s for sure.

Already a member in Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, and other social networking sites? You can as well add one more site to that list. This time, unexpectedly, it’s from Japan. Mobikade is a mobile based social networking site which lets you have fun, free of cost.
Now here’s the most important part. You can earn money by referring your friends to this site. You’ll be paid ₤1 every time you invite a friend to the site. This is a promotional offer and they’re planning to do this till they reach 10,000 subscribers. So, if you’ve not signed up with Mobikade, DO IT NOW.
Mobikade also has a range of offers to entice mobile phone users to use its services. Whatever you do, you’ll be provided with certain credit points, which you can redeem later. To begin with, Mobikade lets you send and receive free SMS or text messages. In order to use this free SMS service, you need to have a certain amount of points accumulated though. Mobikade has an option called “What’s up now?” which is similar to the “What are you doing now?” field in Facebook which lets your friends know what you are doing by the hour. You can type whatever you want in the “What’s up now?” and even upload images to let your friends know what you’re doing. In your spare time, you can also download some cool mobile games from the site, free of cost. You earn points for each and everything you do with Mobikade, and you can redeem the points later to win goodies like shopping vouchers, discount coupons, gift items, and so on.
A market expert recently stated that going at this rate, mobile phone will soon become a haven for anyone who wants to promote a product/service effectively. And isn’t that what I’ve been telling you guys for quite some time now?

Facebook, as we all know, has opened up to applications and advertisements in its effort to monetize the site. There are a number of mobile applications in Facebook which you can access straight from your mobile. What this means is you don’t have to sit in front of your computer and have access to the internet all the time to keep in touch with your friends and fellow members in Facebook.
Frengo is the leading developer of mobile applications in Facebook. So far, it has developed some very successful Facebook applications including Top Friends, iPredict, My Jokes, and Flirtable. All these applications are mobile compatible. Especially Flirtable, which went live only about a month back, has got a fabulous response from Facebook users and has got over 2 million users.
The main reason behind the success of these applications is that they are all mobile based applications. Internet based applications, though very engaging and all, have their own limitations. You can’t expect to sit in front of the PC all day long and you most certainly can’t expect to keep in touch with your fellow users and friends by the hour. Thanks to the phenomenon of social networking, people these days want to keep in touch with their friends regularly and want to keep track of things by the minute or as they happen. With this being the case, the developers thought, and rightly so, that people need to keep in touch with each other, with or without the internet. In comes the mobile phone. The mobile phone is always with us and we carry it wherever we go. A mobile based social networking application was always going to be a win-win one for both the users and the developers and it’s been proved right yet again. Users get to keep in touch with their friends by the minute as they can send instant messages, gifts, and images, check stats, receive alerts, be notified of events, and so on while the developers get to enjoy the unlimited surge of traffic that their applications get.
Being a Facebook user, I can assure you that a hell lot of people love using these applications and thanks to the unprecedented response for such applications, Facebook has well over 11,000 applications now. I mean; I know mobile advertising and marketing is going to be the next big thing and all that, but the pace at which the industry is growing is simply unbelievable!!!
