I’ve time and again mentioned about India and how it is probably the biggest market for mobile marketers in South Asia and stuff like that. But then, I constantly need to remind the skeptics out there that I don’t talk in air. I do have facts to back up my claims. So, here goes.
The country has a strong mobile subscriber base of over 300 million and has over a 100 million new additions every year. So, needless to say, all eyes are on India as far as mobile marketing is concerned.
ICICI Bank, one of the leading banks in the subcontinent, is enjoying great success with its mobile banking initiative. Ever since the bank started offering mobile banking services, there has been a steady growth in the number of mobile banking subscribers. Similarly, many other banks have introduced mobile banking facility and the number of mobile banking subscribers is getting increased by the day.
Surprisingly, Netcore Solutions, a Mumbai based mobile marketing company, has enjoyed an even bigger success than ICICI. The company specializes in creating permission based mobile marketing campaigns and has had a great success rate so far. Netcore offers a service called MyToday, which offers a variety of mobile phone services like headlines of the day, stock market tips and updates, sports updates, health, astrology, and other things which will be sent to the subscribers as text messages. All these text messages will have a text ad at the bottom. So far, the response has been double positive and the company has enjoyed great success.
The company was launched only in 2006 and within just a span of two years, it has more than four million subscribers now. It gets a whopping 300,000 new additions every month. That’s a mind boggling 10,000 additions every single day.
Read it again. 10,000 new additions every day. And that’s for a single mobile marketing company. India will probably have hundreds of such companies in the next few years. Just imagine the kind of business they can do with targeted mobile marketing.
Are you still wondering why India is considered the next big thing in mobile marketing?Tags: marketing campaigns, mobile marketing company, mobile banking, mobile marketing, mobile phone services, mobile subscriber, text messages

Lightspeed Research recently conducted a survey in Britain regarding mobile shopping. The question asked was – Are you comfortable with the idea of buying products or services through your mobile phone? 1000 people took part in the survey and over 17% of them were positive about buying products or services through their mobile phone.
Most of the participants also said that they will buy stuff only from well known retailers. Also, they were comfortable with shopping for ‘on-the-go’ products like concert tickets, film tickets, holiday vouchers, and travel tickets.
With mobile coupons becoming more and more popular, I think the next mobile revolution will take place in the retail industry. While 17% might look like a small figure, it will certainly go up if people find it easy and secure to shop from their mobile phone. Already, mobile based services like mobile banking are popular because banks have made the process very simple and secure at the same time. So, an effective, easy-to-use platform with a secure payment gateway could be the best way to entice customers into mobile shopping.

In just about a couple of months, mobile users in India will be able to use their mobile phone to pay for things, just as they use their credit card or debit card.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stated in its annual policy statement that it will come up with the guidelines to formulate a payment system using mobile phones. RBI is discussing seriously with service providers, banks, and other financial institutions about this move and the guidelines are expected to be released on June 15th.
Already, mobile banking in India is gaining popularity big time with lots of big banks embracing this technology to make it easier for their customers. Prominent banks like ICICI, HDFC, and SBI offer mobile banking facility and ICICI has gone one step ahead and has started a mobile based service called mShop which allows you to shop using your mobile phone.
I think this is a great move by RBI. Mobile phone market in India is huge and a mobile based payment service makes complete sense at this stage. FYI, I had already blogged about a mobile based service in India where you can use your mobile phone as your airplane boarding pass. Things like this can really help people a lot and can make mobile phones more useful than what they are right now. Stay tuned for more updates on this issue.

A recent Harris Interactive Study comes up with some interesting statistics.
1. Around 25% of mobile users like to access mobile internet and purchase things using their credit card.
2. Around 20% of users expressed interest in the concept of mobile wallet – in which charges will be billed to their mobile accounts.
3. Around 10% expressed their interest for stock trading and wire transfers via their mobile phone.
4. Around 16% make use of mobile banking facilities.
While these statistics show that mobile users are becoming comfortable using their mobile phones for banking and shopping, a significant number of mobile users are still worried about security encryption of their data and the possibility of financial scams.
Actually, when services like banking and shopping went online, people raised similar concerns. It took a while for people to understand that doing things online can be much easier and safer. Look at the scenario now. People use internet banking and online shopping regularly. Similarly, I think it’s the duty of network carriers and the concerned parties that offer these facilities to address mobile users’ concerns and reassure them. Once they do, people will embrace this technology and mobile based services and facilities will become enormously popular.
